Scottish Council for Independent Schools

Improving access and upgrading processes

SCIS is a membership organization that represents and promotes the interest of mainstream and additional support needs independent schools. The SCIS vision is to provide a professional service to member schools that is supportive, relevant and of high quality and thus enable the sector to make a worthwhile contribution to the development of education in Scotland.

The original SCIS website was around 4/5 years old and the site had a vast amount of high quality information presented. However, it was not very easy to navigate and did not encourage user interaction.

Over a six month period, designs and information architecture were developed and refined to completely change the user experience. The new design would allow existing content to be migrated without extensive rework.

A new security model was created to manage the secure processing of sensitive information, keeping data safe whilst opening up new opportunities for self-service.

Every process that organized information in the previous site was examined, broken down and rebuilt. Slow processes were improved, redundant processes removed and new ones added. Dashboards were also created to present summary information to users of the public site and to highlight information for permissioned users.

The organization of content is now much clearer, allowing site users to locate information much more quickly. From professional learning programs to parent guidance materials, from financial reports to vacancy posts; less time is spent searching and more on reading.

Training course bookings have been improved with slicker processes, leading to a dramatic reduction in post-booking admin and customer service requests.
